El Viento
These drawings were created while I was attending a residency in the Summer of 2017 - Barcelona, Spain. They are simply, my interpretation of the very first and second verses of the bible. El Viento in Spanish is translated as wind. The Hebrew word describing God in the text below is ruach meaning wind, spirit and breath.
Physical Inspiration: geometry, modernist forms and architecture, historical text, pastel, black card stock, cotton balls
Spiritual Inspiration: La creación...En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra. Y la tierra estaba desordenada y vacía, y las tinieblas estaban sobre la faz del abismo, y el Espíritu de Dios se movía sobre la faz de las aguas.
Translation: The History of Creation...In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
My process: The search starts by looking for what I deem as desirable, modern buildings. Once I find a few dozen, I drop them into Photoshop and distort them to my liking. Shortly after some deliberation about color and composition, I print the slightly distorted buildings or forms. Cut each out of printer paper and use them as stencils to create the forms in my drawings. Pastel is applied to the stencil with a cotton ball to create the effect you see on the black surface.
