NASCENT FLESH SERIES
Each of the faces in this series is a representation of the fact that God expresses himself in multiple permutations and through individuals. One of his main expressions is the Holy Spirit; the other two are the Father and the Son, Jesus.
My work is connected to an historical event in the first century, where the Holy Spirit went from being wind and then instantly the Holy Spirit manifested himself into what has been referred to as, “tongues of fire” that covered each of the 120 apostles and disciples of Christ who were present in the room that day.
What you see in my work is an abstracted face that is being ignited physically and symbolically transformed, as a reference to God activating a person’s faith, spirit and their physicality as well. The faces are a direct translation of biblical text where it states that this was a visible spiritual event. My artwork is activated by the sun and artificial light. The results are mysterious, unexpected but intentional. Much like when natural light from the sun hits the back of the faces, they are illuminated.
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
