Before reading below try to Imagine............. Image #5 is 6.5 feet tall by 3.5 feet wide. It's large and imposing.

Physical Inspiration: A Steamy Surf Session in the Pacific Ocean

What I have learned about myself is that I continue to make art about the people and things that I love and I love surfing! Surfing changed quite a bit of my life few years ago but I never felt compelled to draw it or paint it....however, for some reason when I studied the early stages of this drawing, it seemed like water was the only solution for a balanced composition with the two top heavy orbs.

There is a level of love that has to be attached to a person or situation for it to show up in my artwork. There was one outstanding, very particular day my good friend-surf partner and I continue to recall. I was just learning to surf, it was a grey, late afternoon, the waves at Blackies were large enough for a significant number of short boarders to come out and surf. The waves were probably 4ft in reality but felt like 6ft to me. The air was such that it created what looked like steam on the surface. We've all seen this effect in pools and jacuzzis, but this was created naturally, not by water heaters and cold California evening air. It was special!  It began to rain and when we looked out at the sea in front of us we could hardly see anything but ominous conditions. The rain sprinkles dropped and become one with the ocean and the ocean created steam as if to say something back to the rain. I was right in the middle, watching their conversation.

Spiritual Inspiration: The genesis of creation

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. When I read this verse, I knew it applied to this erasing-drawing! (Genesis 1:2)

I'd love to know your thoughts. Send them my way when you the have time or the inclination. Stay tuned for more about how I observed and recorded God's Spirit and why nature tells us so much about God.

Enjoy!

Ants, The Mona Lisa and Haboobs Oh My!

Observed and Recorded Permutation of The Holy Spirit -VII

Image #4

Physical Inspiration: Arizona Sand Storm or more appropriately titled "Haboob" named after a Sudanese sand storm, surfaced in Arizona for the first time in 2012.

Time lapse videos of the sand storms have been my only moving source of contact with the exquisite cloud of dust. I was not fortunate enough to be in my home town to witness this marvelous natural occurrence. Although, I have a nice little collection of newspaper articles and photos courtesy of my mom, that documented the event.

When you look at the orange erasing, you will see that it is a hanging cloud of dust with lines that represent marching ants as they crawl in and around the cloud of dust. What I found most fascinating was that this enormous cloud of dust caused by wind and other conditions moves through a place with very little damage at an almost invisible speed to the naked eye. Unless, you are in the eye of the storm or very near.

Spiritual Inspiration: The Holy Spirit as a Person

All of my drawings are tall vertical portraits of a "person" in front of a landscape, much like the Mona Lisa. Think about portraiture from Leonardo Da Vinci's perspective for a moment. "The Mona Lisa" comes to his studio and sits for him day in and day out. He observes her under light, they speak about matters significant or not, and recorded her natural essence and physique. During a painting session or two, he decided to place her in front of a beautiful spacious landscape for final effect.

I did almost exactly the same thing with my erasings, what you see is an abstract portrait of the Holy Spirit (an abstract concept in its' natural form) in front of an abstract landscape. These drawing were made over 15 months restricting all secular information while in my studio and almost all of my time outside of the studio. This was a strategic decision to invite "a person" ie. the Holy Spirit into my studio and life, to be the subject of my drawings. I had to become familiar with God's Spirit in order to observe and record Him properly. So, I began with the most basic definition. The bible states that the Holy Spirit takes up residency in the hearts of believers at the point of conversion. And, according to scripture, "The Holy Spirit" or as stated in the Old Testament, "God's Spirit" is the third PERSON of the Trinity and is ascribed the same divine attributes that belong to the Father and the Son. So, in a few words, when you look at my drawings they are portraits of God ie. "The Holy Spirit" an abstract being (made manifest by wind conditions and likened to an ephemeral dust cloud) in front of an abstract landscape.

I'd love to know your thoughts. Send them my way when you the have time or the inclination. Stay tuned for more about how I observed and recorded God's Spirit and why nature tells us so much about God.

Physical Inspiration: a swirling school of fish

If this series of 13 erasings created for the #BakersfieldMuseumofArt was to have a "title track" this erasing-drawing would be it! It is both drawn with a pencil and erased with as many as 5 different erasers.

Spiritual Inspiration: Acts 2:2

All of my work hinges on one piece of scripture , I didn't illustrate this verse but when I see the verse and the erasing - drawing side by side, it sure seems like I did.

Acts 2:2 says....And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. They meaning, the disciples of Jesus Christ, were waiting in an upper room for the Holy Spirit. But, they didn't know what they were waiting for. Jesus had died but appeared to them 3 days after his death and told them to wait for about 40 days in Jerusalem. This verse is the description of what happened on that day, which we now call Pentecost.

I'd love to know your thoughts. Send them my way when you the have time or the inclination.

Observed and Recorded Permutation of The Holy Spirit - I

LEAD BY LINE

Drawings By Three California Artists

Scott Hassell, Pamela Diaz Martinez, and Anne Marie Rousseau explore fascinating ways to interpret the subject of the line and all its manifestations. Scott Hassell works with diluted acrylic inks combined with alcohol to create interesting and varied color mixtures. Pamela Diaz Martinez looks to weather patterns to create reductive drawings using pastel on Duralar. Anne Marie Rousseau uses a deceptively simple formulation of connecting 100 points on a line to another 100 points on a line to discover how a rudimentary line can convey meaning. Through a combination of spills, bush strokes, and erasure marks, each artist’s processes result in an enticing blend of patterns and abstract shapes.
